Resisting State-Violence Within Carceral Provincial Human Cages and Beyond

    When:
    Wednesday, March 11, 2020
    5:30 PM – 7:00 PM
    Where:
School of Kinesiology and Health Studies
    Room: 101
    Find on Campus Map
    Description:

Special talk by Souheil Benslimane in which he will discuss his work and activism as a carceral abolitionist and the Coordinator of the Jail Accountability and Information Line, a community led hotline aimed to work in solidarity with people behind bars at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.
He will also speak to the latest report he co-authored calling Bell’s contract with Ontario prisons "predatory." Indeed, despite Bell’s “Let’s Talk” mental health campaign, the phone company makes millions of dollars from Ontario’s outdated jail phone-system which causes economic and mental distress to prisoners, their families, and their communities of support.

Souheil Benslimane lives, loves, learns, and resists on the traditional unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Algonquin Nation. He is an illegalized and criminalized migrant who is currently awaiting imminent deportation to Morocco. Upon his release from prison, Souheil became involved in abolitionist as well as prisoner and migrant justice organizing as a member of the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project (www.cp-ep.org), a member of the Ottawa Sanctuary Network (https://ottawasanctuarycity.ca/) and the Coordinator of the Jail Accountability and Information Line (https://cp-ep.org/jailhotline/).
