    Speaker Bio

    Dr. Ashok Das is associate professor of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHM). His research explores urban shelter related issues in developing Asia. Participation, empowerment, slum upgrading, affordable housing, decentralized governance, integrated microfinance, disaster risk reduction, and planning education are key interests. He was co-chair of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning’s (ACSP) Global Planning Educators Interest Group (GPEIG), and currently serves on ACSP’s new Global Planning Education Committee (GPEC). He was educated at UCLA (Ph.D. in Urban Planning), Kansas State University (M.Arch. and M.A. in Environmental Planning & Management), and the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (B. Arch.). His latest work is the edited book, Informal Services in Asian Cities: Lessons for Urban Planning and Management from the COVID-19 Pandemic, published by the Asian Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank Institute (https://doi.org/10.56506/DYXR6960).
